Lions in talks over £10m Twickenham warm-up match ahead of 2021 tour to South Africa… but Premiership clubs won’t be happy

  • The Lions are in talks about staging a bumper international home Test
  • Argentina and France are believed to be under consideration as opponents
  • But the move is set to put them at loggerheads with Premiership clubs

The British and Irish Lions are in talks about staging a bumper international match against a top Test-playing nation at Twickenham in 2021.

A highly lucrative £10million Test is being eyed up ahead of the 2021 tour to South Africa

Argentina and France are under consideration as opponents, according to The Telegraph.

The British and Irish Lions are in talks to stage a Test in England for the first time since 1977

It would be the first Lions fixture in England since the clash with the Barbarians in September 1977.

The last time the Lions played on home soil was against Argentina in Cardiff before the tour of New Zealand in 2005.

But the move appears set to put the Lions at odds with Premiership clubs as they seek more preparation time before the start of the tour.

Currently the Lions are due to play their first match in South Africa on July 3, just seven days after the Premiership final.

They are desperate to avoid the chaos of their 2017 trip to New Zealand when the squad arrived only three days before the first tour match.

But Premiership Rugby are reportedly not prepared to alter their domestic season for Lions years.

The Lions are understood to have hoped the fixture would provide sufficient revenue that they could buy off the English clubs for condensing their season.
