There is something so heartwarming reading about the love of grandparents for their grandchildren. Grab a few of these titles to read to celebrate Grandparent’s Day in September or to just enjoy any time of the year.

Children’s Books About Grandparents

One of the exciting things about the influx of books about grandparents is that there is so much more diversity in selection. Grab the rocking chair and let’s read.


For very young listeners, check out Here Comes Grandma by Janet Lord is a fun rhythmic read aloud.  Little ones will enjoy repeating the sentence, “Here comes grandma.”

I Love My Glam-Ma by Samantha Berger celebrates all things glamorous about our grandmas.  Grandmas have lots of spirit and adventure and this book showcases all of that.

Grandma’s house might be tiny, but it can hold a lot of love.  Grandma’s Tiny House by JaNay Brown-Wood is a fun counting story that makes this is fun one to read aloud for circle time.

I love Our Granny by Margaret Wild.  Two children compare their Granny to other grannies.  There are so many things that make each granny unique.

In Grandma’s Purse by Vanessa Brantley-Newton we find out that grandma’s purse can hold pure magic.

My Grandma and Me by Mina Javaherbin is the story of love between grandchild and grandmother. Set in Iran, the illustrations are gorgeously detailed.

Bright and colorful grandmas of all shapes and sizes is what you’ll find in Todd Parr’s, The Grandma Book.  Also, check out his The Grandpa Book.

Another set for little ones is Karen Katz’s lift the flap book, Grandma and Me.  Pair it with Grandpa and Me.

Most of can remember taking trips to our grandparents’ house.  Something made that house super special. Some children take a trip to such a house in Bigmama’s by Donald Crews.  The summer fun is about to begin.

I adore Patricia Polacco’s books about amazing human beings.  She has so many to highlight but one of my favorites is Thundercake.  In this story, grandma distracts her grandaughter from an incoming storm by gathering all the supplies to make a special cake with a very interesting ingredient.

It’s always fun to go exploring with grandma and that is just what a young girl and her Abuela  do in Abuelaby Arthur Dorros.  They fly over New York looking at all the sights and sounds.

Meg Medina is another fabulous author and you’ll enjoy her story, Mango, Abuela, and Me.  In this story, Abuela is coming to live with her granddaughter.  She has to travel a great distance and Mia wants to make sure her Abuela has things from her old home in her new home.

Important lessons can be learned from a grandparent and that is just what occurs in Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena. A young boy and his grandmother travel across town on the bus each Sunday. Along the way, the boy questions things that he sees and ponders things. Each question is met with a thoughtful response from his grandmother. She helps him to see the beauty around him.


Our Favorite Dayby Joowon Oh is the story of Papa who follows the same routine day after day.  But, there is something special about one day of the week.  On Thursdays he visits the craft store and gets take out for lunch because someone very special is coming to visit. This is a sweet story about a loving tradition between grandparent and child.

Speaking on important lessons passed down…Looking for Yesterday by Alison Jay is the story of a little boy trying to turn back time. His grandfather helps him to realize that yesterday is full of great memories but every new day brings adventure.

Grandpa’s Top Threes by Wendy Meddour will have you wanting to play top threes. Henry engages his grandfather in conversation and interaction by playing a word game. At the end, Granpa shares his top three things about Granny who has passed. Grab the kleenex.

The Big Five by Bella Makatini is the story of a young boy who is staying with his grandpa for the week. Grandpa has a picture of animals from his home country that the boy notices.  That leads to a story a day.

A Plan for Pops by Heather Smith is a story of a family and how family sticks together no matter what. Granddad and Lou build something for Pops that help him with a new challenge. And, they use a clever Rube Goldberg contraption to unveil it.

The Bee Tree by Patricia Polacco is the story of a grandpa who shares his wisdom with his granddaughter when they go on a search.

Drawn Together by Minh LÊ is a beautiful story that shows that love doesn’t have to be expressed through only words.

I remember reading the Song and Dance Man by Karen Ackerman with my kiddos in our basal reader many moons ago.  Grandpa takes the grandkids to the attic and finds some props from his old vaudeville stage days.  The grandkids get a sneak peek into the past of their loved one.

Grandparents can tell the best stories.  Dada-ji tells Aneel stories full of the Indian culture in Hot Hot Roti for Dada-Ji by F Zia.

Head into the garden with Grandpa in Rainbow Stew by Cathryn Falwell as they pick vegetables from the wet garden to make a delicious stew. The recipe is included.

Grandmas and Grandpas

Young children who love Llama Llama will enjoy Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa. Llama Llama is sleeping over for the first time at Gram and Grandpa’s house. But little stuffy is missing. If you want another book about a reluctant child staying with a grandparent, check out Nana in the City by Lauren Castillo.

The Ultimate Guide to Grandmas and Grandpas by Sally Lloyd-Jones reminds of us all the important things we to do for our grandparents like making sure they get their naps and helping them find parking spots.  It’s a fun little twist on how to take care of our grandparents.

Illness and Death of a Grandparent

It eventually comes a time when children will have to deal with a sick or dying grandparent.  These books can help.

The Remember Balloons by Jessie Oliveros is a beautiful book about a grandfather dealing with memory loss.  The balloons are compared to the memories floating away.

It is helpful to have some tangible to help young children hold on to their memories of their grandparents.  In Grandpa’s Stories by Joseph Coelho, a young girl collects her memories of her grandfather in a special notebook he created for her.

My Superhero Grandpa by Michele McAvoy helps kids visualize that even though Grandpa is in Heaven, he can still share his superpowers with us.

Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs is written by the very talented Tomie DePaola. “She will come back in your memory whenever you think about her.” is the gentle message kids will take away from the book.
